SCRIPTURE Galatians 5:1–4 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.  Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.  For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.  Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”  

COMMENTARY This is written to believers.  The passage tells us we can fall from grace if we start believing that we are justified only by our works of the law.  Christ is become of no effect unto them that had fallen from grace by going back to the law. This is something we must be wary of.  True and saving faith results in works God does through us (John 15:5), based on the foundation of our faith.  Paul states specifically that Christ will do nothing for those who have come to believe that the works of the law will save them (Romans 3:20).  But again, this is a warning to believers not to move their faith to something other than Christ.  The only reason for such a warning is that it could happen. However, those who believe in eternal security would say that God is not being honest for this can never happen.
