SCRIPTURE Hebrews 5:8–9 “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.”  

COMMENTARY Jesus Christ is the source of salvation for those that obey Him.  Obedience is a choice we make in this life and is equated with love of God elsewhere in Scripture (ex. Jeremiah 7:23, John 14:21, 15:9-10, 1 John 5:3, among others).  While we cannot be perfect in this life, God is looking for the heart that hates sin and submits to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  The implication is clear: Jesus is not a sacrifice (consistent with Hebrews 10:26–31) for those who are committed to disobedience after coming to Christ.  This is yet another verse contrary to the doctrine of eternal security.  The promise of eternal life is not made to all who believe, but “unto all them that obey him.” The message is clear: no obedience = no salvation.  It need to be stated that this is not perfect obedience but rather a commitment to following where God leads just as His saints have historically done.
