SCRIPTURE 1 John 5:16-17 “ If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death..”

COMMENTARY Clearly teaches that there is a sin, for believers (since it is referenced here that a brother has sinned), that leads unto death. If guaranteed, unconditional, eternal security was a true doctrine there would be no sin that leads unto death. Furthermore this must be spiritual death since there is nothing remarkable about a person physically dying. Finally, note that it says explicitly that God “shall give him life.” Life here is Greek zōē meaning “life real and genuine, vita quae sola vita nominanda (Cicero, de sen. 21, 77), a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last forever.” Contrasting with death here which is thanatos meaning “the misery of soul arising from sin, which begins on earth but lasts and increases after the death of the body.”

If this is the same sin of Matthew 12:31-32, then it clearly means that a believer can indeed blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Otherwise the logical inference is that there are two different sins that lead to death and that we do not know what this one is. But in any event the contrast here is life and death. Not just physical life or physical death but also eternal life and death. Once more this clearly shows regardless of what others teach that all is not finished.
