SCRIPTURE 2 Timothy 2:15–18 “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.  But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.  And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.”  

COMMENTARY Notice that Paul wrote to Timothy that some believers had their faith overthrown by false teaching.  Overthrow (Greek anatrepō) means exactly what it sounds like; to overthrow, overturn, destroy: ethically, to subvert one’s faith.  Contrary to the modern church’s teaching of eternal security, Paul’s epistles state time and again that loss of faith = loss of salvation (on a side note, this false teaching; specifically that the resurrection has already occurred, was making the rounds.  See 2 Thessalonians 2:1–3).
