SCRIPTURE Hebrews 10:35–39 “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.  For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.  Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.  But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”  

COMMENTARY This is another passage directly contradicting the doctrine of eternal security.  It clearly states that drawing back (from saving faith) leads to perdition (eternal damnation) and that we can abandon our faith (confidence), with eternal consequences.  Paul asserts as a confidence, at the end, that we will not shrink back, yet there is no reason to offer this encouragement after the prior warning if such was not possible.  Again as we have stated elsewhere it would be like a math teacher stating to the class there will be a test tomorrow and he is sure all will do well.  It is an expressed confidence only.
