SCRIPTURE John 8:31 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, if ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed.”  

COMMENTARY Jesus told Christians who believed on Him that if they continued in His word (kept His commandments), then (if they met that condition) they were in fact His disciples (true believers, on the narrow way to eternal life). “If” is always a conditional clause, indicating a requirement to do something to achieve the objective.  Hence, we must continue in His word (keep His commandments) to be considered a true disciple, contrary to what guaranteed, unconditional eternal security adherents claim.  Yet, guaranteed, unconditional eternal security proponents seem to ignore the word “if” throughout Scripture changing what God as stated as conditional to certitude (and as a rule of thumb, conditional statements are far too often overlooked by expositors as they replace the conditions with their believe in certainty).
